Do I need a clicker?

No, you do not need a clicker. Top Hat is a Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) application that runs on your smartphone, mobile device, or web browser.

What if I don't know my join code when setting up my account?

If the semester has not started or you haven't had your first class meeting, wait before setting up your account in case your professor has not created the course yet. By accessing Top Hat through the Canvas course link you will be able to link directly into the course. Each class will have a different join code. Your professor will provide you with a join code.

What if I don't have a smartphone?

For students that don't have smartphones, you can access Top Hat through the web browser Top Hat app or by sending responses in by SMS/Text message. The number to text will appear on the question slides when your professor starts presenting.

Can I share my account with another student in another class?

No. Since your Top Hat login is the same as your Ithaca Netpass ID, you cannot share accounts with other students. Always keep your passwords safe and secure.

Can my account be used in more than one course?

Yes, you may have multiple professors using this student response system. You can access your course lobby by clicking the "X" in the top left corner of the web browser, or "< My Courses" on the mobile app.

What if there is no Top Hat link in your Canvas course?

If there is no link, but your professor said you will be using Top Hat in class, please contact your professor. They may have simply forgotten to add the tool to their Canvas course.

My professor doesn't use Canvas, can I create a Top Hat account?

If your professor does not use Canvas but wants to use Top Hat in class, make sure you have the join code before you try to create a Top Hat account otherwise you will not be able to complete the registration process.
