Using Get Marked to Upload Quiz/Exams to Canvas

What is GetMarked?

Getmarked is an online tool for converting documents with quiz questions into files that may be imported into Canvas or any other LMS.  Ithaca College has integrated GetMarked as a tool in Canvas for the 24-25 school year.

Purpose of Tool

Get Marked saves faculty time by converting documents containing quiz questions to a format that can be bulk imported directly into Canvas quizzes or Item Banks. You can upload your .docx or PDF quiz in any format or layout and export in a "QTI" format that can be imported into Canvas Quizzes or Item Banks.

Add the GetMarked tool to a Canvas course

  1. Go to the Canvas course where you want to add the Quiz or Item Bank.
  2. In the course navigation, click on Settings.
  3. Click the Navigation tab.
  4. Scroll down the list and find the tool "GetMarked Quiz Importer".
  5. Click the 3 dots and select Enable.
  6. Click Save button

GetMarked Quiz Importer tool should appear in the Course Navigation.

NOTE: Students will also see the 'GetMarked Quiz Importer' tool in the navigation menu once activated. You may want to come back to Disable the GetMarked item from your navigation once you have completed your question imports to avoid any student confusion. To disable the menu item, visit course Settings again, Navigation tab, click the 3 dots and select Disable, then make sure you click the Save button.

Preparing your question document

GetMarked is intelligent in that it can interpret a document with questions in a variety of formats. You may indicate the correct answer with bold, asterisk, highlight or answer tag. All major question types are supported (multiple choice, T/F, multiple response, cloze/fill-in, open-ended, matching). Images, audio, tables are supported.

Importing the question document

  1. Click on Get Marked Quiz Importer in the course navigation. (Note the tool will open in a new browser tab.)
  2. Click Browse to search your computer and select your file.
  3. Click the Submit button. It may take a few minutes to process the file.

Under "Jobs", the name of your file should appear.

 Viewing or editing your questions

  1. Hover over the name of the job and click on View.
  2. View the questions to check for accuracy of question type, question format, and correct answer.
  3. Click the pencil icon to modify any of the questions.

Exporting to format for Canvas

  1. Hover over the name on the job and click Export.
  2. Under Learning Management Systems, select Canvas.  You will see a "Exporting to Canvas QTI" box. It may take a few minutes to process.
  3. Choose a location on your computer and Save the .zip file.

Should you import the QTI file into a Canvas Quiz or Item bank?

  • Use a Quiz if you are just using this batch of questions for a particular class once.
  • Use an Item Bank if you want to build a collection of questions that you can reuse in any of your current or future courses or if you want to do random draws from an Item Bank.

Importing the QTI .zip question file into a quiz in Canvas

  1. Rename the file to what you want the name of the quiz to be.
  2. Follow the step-by-step instructions provided by Get Marked for both Classic and New Quizzes.

Importing the QTI .zip question file into an Item Bank in Canvas

Note: Item Banks are compatible with New Quizzes only.

  1. Rename the file to what you want the name of the item bank to be.
  2. Enable Item Banks tool in the left navigation using course Settings, and selecting the Navigation Tab.
  3. Follow the step-by-step instructions provided by Canvas.
