Overview

Canvas supports migrating Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes, either one at a time, or in bulk during course import. After migrating your quiz, it will appear at the bottom of your course Quizzes list with the solid rocket ship icon (New Quizzes icon.)

How Classic Quiz Content Converts to New Quizzes

All Classic Quiz question types are supported. You may see some minor differences - Multiple Dropdown questions come over as Fill in the Blank questions, and Text (no question) is called Text Block. Functionally these are identical.

When a Classic Quiz is migrated to New Quizzes, the quiz type is permanently set and cannot be changed. The Quiz Type field on the assignment details page will be grayed out, regardless of the quiz type.

Classic Quiz types migrate to New Quizzes as follows:

  • Graded Quiz migrates as a Graded Quiz.
  • Practice Quiz migrates as a Graded Quiz worth 0 points (there is no Practice Quiz type in New Quizzes). To further replicate practice quiz behavior, you can select Do not count this assignment towards the final grade in te assignment settings.
  • Graded Survey migrates as a Graded Survey.
  • Ungraded Survey migrates as an Ungraded Survey.

Because the quiz type is locked after migration, it is important to verify that the correct quiz type is set in Classic Quizzes before migrating.

Assignment Group Placement

If the original Classic Quiz was already assigned to an assignment group, it will remain in that group after migration. Otherwise, migrated quizzes may be placed in a new assignment group called Migrated Quizzes. This assignment group placement can be changed at any time through the assignment details page.

Migrate a Single Quiz

1. Open your Canvas course and select Quizzes from the left-hand course navigation menu.

2. Locate the Classic Quiz you want to migrate.

3. Open the quiz's Options menu (the three-dot icon.)

4. Select Migrate.

The migrated quiz will appear at the bottom of your quiz list with a New Quiz icon (a solid, filled-in rocket ship icon.)

Bulk Migrate During Course Import

You can convert all Classic Quizzes at once when importing course content.

  1. Open the Canvas course you want to import content into (typically your new semester course shell.)
  2. Select Settings from the left-hand course navigation menu.
  3. In the right-hand sidebar, click Import Course Content.
  4. From the Content Type drop-down menu, select Copy a Canvas Course.
  5. Use the Search for a course field to locate the source course you wish to copy from.
  6. Under Content, choose either All content or Select specific content, depending on your needs.
  7. Check the box labeled Convert content to New Quizzes.

  8. Click + Add to Import Queue.

Once the import job completes, your migrated quizzes will appear in the destination course's Quizzes list with the solid rocket ship icon indicating they are New Quizzes.

This is especially useful when copying an older course into a new semester shell.

Note: Question banks linked through Classic Quiz question groups need to be migrated into the New Quizzes item bank structure separately. After Migration: Review Checklist
