Add a Blog Post

Body

Please note: You will need to have a Blog set up on your site before you can start adding posts. Review the Add a Blog article if necessary.

Be sure you’re logged into Drupal at www.ithaca.edu/login. (If you receive an Access Denied message, it just means you’re already logged in.)

Once logged in, go directly to the blog. (For example, a content manager intending to add a post to the Writing Alumni News blog would go to https://www.ithaca.edu/academics/school-humanities-and-sciences/writing.)

Click the “Add Blog Post” option (from the menu above the page intro).

Once on the editable page to craft the Blog Post, there are two tabs to be aware of:

  1. The “Main Content” tab will be open first, with default fields for Title and Byline present.
  2. The “Teaser” tab, where you will add the “teaser image” and “teaser text.” This is where the thumbnail and accompanying SHORT description for the Blog Post are managed. These will appear on the Blog landing page and populate automatically as posts are created and published.

Main Content

Fill in the “Title” field. (Remember, the title will determine the URL of the post, so don’t make the title too long. For example: “My First Blog Post” on an example website and blog would appear as .edu/example-website/fancy-blog/my-first-blog-post.)

Add your name to the Byline field. (If you’ve previously created a blog post, this should autofill with your name as you type.) You can also add someone else’s name if you’re ghostwriting a post.

Use the “Add” menu to add additional content blocks (Text, Image-Flow Text, Image, Video, etc.)

Teaser

Select an image to use as the post’s thumbnail. (This is a separate function from any images added in the Main Content tab. Even if you’re only using one image in the post, and want it to function as a thumbnail as well, it needs to be added to the Teaser tab.)

Supply some copy for the “Teaser Text” field. This should be a SHORT, scannable description about the blog post. Best-practice recommendation: Keep this to one or two concise sentences.

To Publish

Below the “Main Content” and “Teaser” tabs are the following fields: “Date” and “Save as.”

Leave the “Date” field as-is if you want to publish right away, or adjust the date accordingly to back-date a post. Note: you can set the date forward, but this feature may not function as intended at this time.

Change the “Save as” field to “Published.”

Click the “Save” button to publish the post.

Finding/Editing Unpublished Posts

Important note: Unpublished Blog Posts will NOT populate the Blog landing page. In order to access unpublished posts for further work, you will need to find them in the Site Group view:

Click the “Site Group” option in the menu at the top of any page of the blog (or the parent site).

This brings you to a backend view of all the pages contained in the Site Group. You can filter for Blog Posts by selecting it from the “Type” menu and clicking the “Apply” button.

Click the Blog Post you want to edit to continue work on it.
