OneNote: How to Transfer Data from One Notebook to Another

The following article explains how to transfer data from one OneNote notebook to another.

For Microsoft Windows

Move or Copy Sections and Pages

  1. Navigate to the notebook you wish to move/copy from at onenote.com and click Open in Desktop App.
  2. Navigate to the notebook you wish to move/copy to at onenote.com in an incognito/private session of your browser or in different browser and click Open in Desktop App.
  3. To move or copy sections from the OneNote desktop application:
    1. Right-click on the section you wish to move or copy and click Move Section To or Copy Section To.
    2. Select the notebook you want to move or copy the section into.
  4. To move or copy pages:
    1. Right-click on the page you wish to move or copy and click Move Page To or Copy Page To.
    2. Select the notebook you want to move or copy the page into.

Move / Export a Notebook

The following steps are for users who use the OneNote 2016 desktop application for Windows and wish to move it to a different location:

  1. Open the OneNote 2016 desktop application.
  2. Click File in the menu.
  3. On the Notebook Information screen, click the Settings button and click Share or Move.
  4. On the Share Notebook screen, select OneDrive - Ithaca College and then click the Browse button.
  5. The Move Notebook window opens. You may create a folder for OneNote notebooks or save the notebook directly into the OneDrive folder.
  6. When you have selected the folder into which you will move the selected notebook, type a name for the notebook in the Notebook Name text box and click the Move button.
  7. When the application is finished syncing the file, a confirmation window will appear.

The following steps are for users who use the OneNote 2016 desktop application for Windows and need to export a notebook file.

  1. Open the OneNote 2016 desktop application.
  2. Click File in the menu.
  3. Click Export.
  4. Select Notebook under the Export Current section.
  5. Select OneNote Package (*.onepkg) under the Select Format section.
  6. Click the Export button.
  7. The Save As window opens. Select Current Notebook under Page Range to export the entire notebook. Locate a folder to save the notebook into and click the Save button.

Import a Notebook

The following steps are for users who use the OneNote 2016 desktop application for Windows and need to import a notebook file.

  1. Open the OneNote 2016 desktop application.
  2. Click File in the menu.
  3. Click Open.
  4. Click Browse and navigate to the folder where you wish to import the OneNote Package (.onepkg) file.
  5. Select the OneNote Package (.onepkg) file you wish to import and click Open.
  6. The Unpack Notebook window opens. Type in a new notebook name into the Name textbox if desired, select a color for the new notebook, and choose a path to save the new notebook into. Click the Create button when ready.

For macOS

The following steps are for users who use the OneNote desktop application for macOS. Of importance, there is no method to export and import notebooks but you can move or copy sections and pages into other notebooks.

  1. Open the OneNote desktop application.
  2. To move or copy sections:
    1. Right-click on the section you wish to move or copy and click Move Section To or Copy Section To.
    2. Select the notebook you want to move or copy the section into.
  3. To move or copy pages:
    1. Right-click on the page you wish to move or copy and click Move Page To or Copy Page To.
    2. Select the notebook you want to move or copy the page into.
