Managing Your Notifications for a Specific Canvas Course 

 

Notifications are important for instructors and students. This quick guide will distinguish between account-level and course-level notifications and provide instructions for modifying the settings for each. 

A notification is something that alerts you when something happens in Canvas such as a new announcement, new discussion post, an assignment due date change, etc.   There are two types of notificationsYou have control over the method and frequency of the notifications you receive. 

  1. a. Email notifications send an email to your ithaca.edu email or other email addresses that you designate in your Account settings.  

  1. b. Push Notifications will send alerts to your devices that have the Canvas app installed or via SMS text if you add that as a content method in your Canvas account settings. 

Account-level notifications vs. Course-level notifications 

Account-level notifications are inherited by all courses by default. However, course-level notifications can be specific to each course and will override the account-level notifications for that course.  

 Where do you find course-level notifications settings? 

  1. 1. In a web browser, go to the course Home page.   

  1. 2. Beneath the Course Status indicator, Click on View Course Notifications button to go to the Course Notification Settings pageThis button may appear on the right side of your browser or below the content. 

What are the options for email notifications? 

Email notifications can be set to notify immediately, Daily Summary, Weekly Summary, or Notifications Off. 

What are the options for push notifications? 

Push notifications can be set to notify immediately or OFF. 

How will I know if my students receive notifications from my course? 

Students control their own notifications. Instructors should remind students to set their course-level notifications and contact methods so they receive timely alerts. 

How do I change my account-level notifications? 

Account-level notification settings can be accessed by clicking Account in the left "global" navigation and clicking on the Notifications link.  The window (on a desktop) should be similar to the following image. 

Remember that your course-level notifications will override your account-level notifications.  

  1. 2. Click Account in the global navigation. 

  1. 3. Click Notifications. 

  1. 4. Check/modify the email and push notifications for your account as a whole.
