
This article explains how instructors and students can use the new Microsoft 365 LTI integration in Canvas. The updated Microsoft Education tool consolidates OneDrive, Teams classes, Teams meetings, and Class Notebook (OneNote), into a streamlined experience.

Microsoft Education
Canvas features the ability for instructors and students to create or join classroom Teams, schedule and join Teams meetings, and access OneDrive and Class Notebook, all using the Microsoft 365 LTI. This integration simplifies access to Microsoft Education tools allowing instructors and students to seamlessly add content to modules, create an assignments, schedule Teams meetings, access Teams, and engage with Microsoft Education tools, all from a centralized interface with embedded functionality.
Note: The new Microsoft Education LTI was enabled on Monday, August 18, 2025, and consolidates the previously separate tools, Class Notebook (OneNote), Microsoft OneDrive, Microsoft Teams classes, and Microsoft Teams meetings, into a single, unified experience. Legacy LTI tools will be disabled on September 15, 2025.
Instructions
Enable Microsoft Education in Canvas
- Open your Canvas course
- Click Settings from the course navigation menu
- Click the Navigation tab
- Scroll down to Microsoft Education, click Enable, then click Save
- Select Microsoft Education from the course navigation menu, then Continue setup
- Click Sign In with your Ithaca College account and Continue setup
- Toggle desired features to Enabled, click Done


Sync Your Canvas Course with Microsoft Teams
Your Canvas roster must be synced with Microsoft Teams before use.
- Open your Canvas course
- Click Settings from the course navigation menu
- Click the Integrations tab
- Toggle the gray Microsoft Sync button so that it turns green
- Click the arrow (>) next to Microsoft Sync, and click Sync Now

Note: Syncing may take several minutes. When people are added or removed from a Canvas Course, they will be automatically added or removed from the Team within 90 minutes. You can also perform a manual sync at any time.
Activate Your Team
After syncing your Canvas course with Microsoft Teams, instructors must activate the Team before students can access it. Until activation, the Team will remain hidden from student view.
- Open the Microsoft Team
- At the top of the Team, locate the Activate banner
- Click Activate to make the Team visible to students

Known Issues
- OneNote content from the previous LTI does not transfer automatically. Instructors must manually copy content from any existing Class Notebooks into the Notebook created through the new Microsoft Education LTI.
