Body

Alteryx Designer is a data analytics and automation platform that lets you blend, prepare, analyze, and visualize data from many sources without writing code. Ithaca College provides Alteryx through the School of Business under Alteryx's SparkED educational lab license, and IT installs and activates it for you on college-owned computers.
Audience
This article is intended for Ithaca College faculty and students who use Alteryx Designer for teaching or coursework on college-owned Windows computers. Alteryx is provided through the School of Business's SparkED educational lab license.
- Faculty and instructors: request Alteryx for a classroom, shared-use, or college-owned primary computer. If you teach with Alteryx, you are also responsible for keeping the School of Business lab license current
- Students: use Alteryx on the School of Business lab computers, or request it for a shared-use or public lab computer for a course
Platform
- Microsoft Windows 11 (version 24H2 or later), 64-bit
- College-owned, IC-managed computers only (installed through the Company Portal)
- Approximately 15 GB of free disk space required
Alteryx Designer is a Windows-only application. It is not available for Apple macOS.

Where Alteryx Is Available
- School of Business labs (Business 105 and Business 204): Alteryx Designer is always installed and kept current on these lab computers
- Classroom and podium computers: available on request for a course taught in another room
- Shared-use and public lab computers: available on request for a specific course or lab
- College-owned primary computers: available on request for faculty and staff who need it
Alteryx Designer is required in Business 105 and Business 204 and will always be available there. Keeping the lab license current for these rooms is required and is the responsibility of the School of Business.
How Alteryx Is Licensed at Ithaca College
Ithaca College does not purchase individual Alteryx licenses. Instead, the College uses Alteryx's SparkED Designer Lab License, a free educational license for educators who teach Alteryx as part of their curriculum and provide access through a computing lab.
- The School of Business requests and renews the lab license each year. About 100 seats are usually requested to cover the installs in the two School of Business labs (Business 105 and Business 204), with the remaining seats used for School of Business staff and students who need Alteryx elsewhere
- Each lab license key is valid for one year from the date it is issued, and Alteryx does not grant extensions, so a new key must be requested and deployed every year
- Because the license is provided and activated by IT as part of the installation, most users do not need to request or manage a license themselves; you only need to request the install
If you simply need Alteryx on a computer, skip to Request an Install below. You do not need your own Alteryx account or license key.
Request a License (Faculty)
If you teach with Alteryx, or you are setting it up for a new course or lab, the lab license is requested through Alteryx's SparkED program by the School of Business's Alteryx license administrator.
If you teach with Alteryx, know when the current license expires and plan the renewal so the key does not expire during the term, including finals week. Lab license keys are valid for one year and cannot be extended. Alteryx takes about a week to provision a new key, and IT then needs lead time to update every lab, classroom, and podium computer, so start the renewal well before the semester begins.
- Review the eligibility and lab license guidance on the Alteryx SparkED for Educators site (you must be teaching Alteryx as part of your curriculum and providing lab access)
- Request the number of lab seats needed to cover your labs, classrooms, and backup rooms (about 100 seats typically covers Business 105 and Business 204 and all other areas)
- When Alteryx issues the new license key, submit the Application and Software Request service and provide the new key so IT can update the Alteryx deployment and push it to the labs
A personal SparkED license (the individual license you can get from Alteryx for your own use) is separate from the lab license and typically allows only about two activations. It is not enough to cover a classroom. Use the lab license process above for labs, classrooms, and shared computers.
Request an Install (Shared Use or Primary Computer)
Use this process to have Alteryx Designer installed on a shared-use computer, a public lab computer, a podium computer, or your college-owned primary computer. You do not need your own Alteryx license. IT activates the College license during the install.
- Submit the Application and Software Request service, and describe which computer(s) or room(s) need Alteryx Designer
- IT reviews the request and adds you (or the requested device) to the Alteryx user group
- Once you are notified that you have been added, install Alteryx Designer from the Company Portal using the steps below
Students: Alteryx is already installed on the Business 105 and Business 204 lab computers, so you can use it there without requesting anything. If you need it on another shared-use or public lab computer for a course, ask your instructor to request it, or submit the request above.
Install Alteryx Designer from the Company Portal
Installing Alteryx Designer also installs Alteryx Predictive Tools with R automatically. There is nothing separate to request.
- Open the Company Portal app on the college-owned computer
- Search for Alteryx Designer
- Select Alteryx Designer, then select Install
- Allow the installation to finish. Alteryx is a large application and may take up to an hour to download and install
- When the install completes, the license is activated automatically. Open Alteryx Designer to confirm it launches
Remove Alteryx Designer
You can uninstall Alteryx Designer yourself from the Company Portal.
- Open the Company Portal app
- Select Installed, then select Alteryx Designer
- Select Uninstall
Troubleshooting
- You see a message that the Alteryx license is expired or about to expire: the annual lab license likely needs to be renewed. Renewing it is the responsibility of School of Business faculty, who should follow up with Alteryx through the SparkED program to obtain a new key. Once the new key is issued, submit it through the Service Desk so IT can deploy it
- A lab or classroom computer shows a license error while others in the room work: that computer may not have received the updated key yet. Report the specific room and computer to the Service Desk so IT can push the license to it
- You cannot log in to a lab or classroom computer at all: that is a separate computer or account issue, not an Alteryx problem. Report the specific room and computer to the Service Desk
- Alteryx does not appear in the Company Portal: you may not have been added to the Alteryx user group yet. Confirm your request has been completed, or contact the Service Desk
