Overview
QR (Quick Response) codes provide a convenient way to direct users to websites, forms, documents, and other online resources using a mobile device. When used appropriately, QR codes can simplify access to digital content and improve the user experience. Because QR codes do not display their destination before being scanned, it is important to follow best practices that promote transparency, trust, and accessibility.

Creating a QR code
Several Ithaca College-supported tools can generate QR codes for websites, forms, and other online resources:
Best Practices
Include the Destination URL
Always display the destination URL near the QR code whenever space allows.
Providing the URL:
Place the URL directly below or beside the QR code so it is easy to identify.
Identify the Publisher
Make it clear who created and maintains the content being linked.
Consider including:
Visible branding helps users recognize trusted institutional resources.
Consider Accessibility
When using QR codes in printed or digital materials:
- Provide the full URL as an alternative access method.
- Ensure sufficient color contrast between the QR code and its background.
- Avoid placing QR codes where they may be difficult to scan or view.
Security Considerations
QR codes can direct users to websites, files, forms, or other online actions. Unlike a standard hyperlink, users typically cannot see the destination before scanning.
Because of this:
While URLs and branding can be falsified, providing them offers greater transparency than a standalone QR code and helps establish trust with your audience.
