Different ways to add the VoiceThread tool to your Canvas course

The VoiceThread tool in Canvas offers four options of what type of VoiceThread to embed in your Canvas course.

Course View:

Display all VoiceThreads shared with this course 

VT Home Page:

Display all VoiceThreads and all courses that a students is enrolled in.

Individual VoiceThread:

Display a single VoiceThread

Assignment Builder:

Create a graded assignment requiring students to create / comment on / watch a Voicethread

 

Embedding VoiceThread from Rich Content Editor (ie. in a Page)

Wherever you see the Rich Content Editor in Canvas, you can embed a VoiceThread link.

  1. Locate the Apps icon [] in the Rich Content Editor.
  2. Click View All.
  3. Click VoiceThread.
  4. Choose the type of VoiceThread that you would like to embed.
  5. Follow on screen prompts. When completed, a link will appear in the text editor.
    Note: the "Activity Name" Text box will be the text visible to students, which will include a hyperlink to your chosen VoiceThread embed option, after clicking save.
  6. Click Save.
  7. Enter student view to test that the newly added content loads properly.

 

Embedding VoiceThread in a Module

  1. Navigate to the Modules tab in you Canvas course.
  2. Click on the "+" button to the right of a module heading.
  3. From the drop-down menu, select "External Tool."
  4. Adjust any settings below, such as Page name or indentation
  5. To force VoiceThread to open in a new tab, check the "Load in new tab" box.
  6. Click "Add Item."
  7. Choose the type of VoiceThread feature that you would like to embed.
    Note: the "Activity name" text will be the title of the entry in the main modules page.
  8. Enter student view to test that the newly added content loads properly. You’ll know that you have entered student view when a purple box appears around the border of the screen.
  9. You may be prompted to log in the first time. Type in your email and click enter.

*DO NOT FORGET, if the module heading is not marked as published, even if the content that lives in the module is individually published, the students will not be able to see it.

 

Adding VoiceThread to An Assignment

  1. Navigate to the Assignments tab in your Canvas course.
  2. Click on the blue "+ Assignment" button in the top right of the page.
  3. You technically can use the Rich Content Editor to add a link to VoiceThread.
  4. Or you can scroll down to "Submission Type" and choose "External Tool" from the drop down menu.  
  5. Click on the "Find" button to pull up the list of installed external tools.
  6. Scroll down and click on VoiceThread.
  7. Choose the type of VoiceThread feature that you would like to embed.
  8. Choose your options, if prompted, for the embedded VoiceThread feature chosen.
  9. Click "Select."
  10. To force VoiceThread to open in a new tab, check the "Load this tool in new tab" box.
  11. Finish setting up your assignment and click "Save"
