Canvas Classic Quizzes vs. New Quizzes
When instructors make a new quiz by clicking the +Quiz button on the Quizzes page, a window will appear prompting instructors to select either Classic Quizzes or New Quizzes.
- Classic Quizzes is the quiz tool that has been available since our transition to Canvas.
- New Quizzes is a new quiz tool still in development by Canvas.
IT @ IC Recommendations:
- If Classic Quizzes currently suits your needs, do not start using New Quizzes at this time.
- If Classic Quizzes do not currently suit your needs, reach out to IT@IC before using New Quizzes. They will help you determine if New Quizzes can meet your needs.
- If you are using New Quizzes now, continue to do so. Remain aware of the differences between the tools, and understand that moving between both Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes will be problematic.
Please review the information below to better understand the current functionality of New Quizzes and what you can expect moving forward regarding quizzes in Canvas.
Understanding limitations of New Quizzes
While Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes share many of the same features, the tools function differently and use different approaches to aid the instructor in quiz development. New Quizzes currently lack important features that some instructors rely on in Classic Quizzes:
- New Quizzes currently do NOT work with 3rd party tools such as proctoring tools (Proctorio or Respondus Lockdown Browser).
- Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes keep separate question banks and do not share.
- Question libraries from Classic Quizzes cannot be migrated to New Quizzes without a time-consuming workaround.
- New Quizzes do NOT offer access to the Rich Text Editor (RCE) used in other areas of Canvas. As such, videos from My Media and other items from Canvas cannot be used in questions.
- New Quizzes do NOT support partial credit for questions in some cases.
- New Quizzes do NOT come with the functionality to build surveys.
- Instructors can NOT revert from New Quizzes to Classic Quizzes.

Understanding expectations moving forward with New Quizzes
Eventually, New Quizzes will replace Classic Quizzes, but rest assured, this will not happen all at once. There will be plenty of time to move from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes. Training will also be available from IT @ IC and Instructure.
Because New Quizzes is in active development, now is the perfect time to provide feedback. If you have experience with New Quizzes, sharing your experiences and suggestions with the greater Canvas community will help shape the tool before broad use of New Quizzes starts.
