We understand that every student has unique computing needs and preferences. While our computer labs offer a reliable workspace for many, we recognize that they may not suit everyone's requirements and that some may require a laptop. This guide will introduce you to the range of options available across multiple locations. We aim to provide flexible solutions that cater to students' needs.
There are a few places on campus one can loan a laptop. Each one has different requirements and different inventories. They are listed here:
Kiosks (8 hours)
IT Service Desk (3 weeks)
Commonly Asked Questions
Kiosks
The laptop kiosks are available 24/7 in two locations:
Library
- Located: Next to the front desk
- Inventory: 6 Macbooks, 12 Windows
- Loan Duration: 8 hours
Park School of Communications
- Located: Next to the Park Cafe, 2nd floor
- Inventory: 6 Macbooks, 6 Windows
- Loan Duration: 8 hours
To use the kiosk just swipe your ID on the device and then follow the instructions on screen. Remember that they can only be checked out for less than 8 hours.
IT Service Desk
Located in Job 104, the Service Desk has flexible term loaners (both MacOS and Windows as well as iPads). Most loans are for 3 weeks, but can be extended for longer if certain need is met. One can request an extension using this form (help.ithaca.edu). Generally, the Service Desk operates on a "first come, first serve" basis. Since there is limited inventory, priority is given to students who request early.
Long-term loaners are no longer offered at the library due to their inventory being absolved and the process being centralized at the Service Desk.
You do not need to request online for a loan, walking down to the Service Desk and asking in person is the preferred way and can get you an answer about availability right away.
Commonly Asked Questions
What happens if I return a loaner after the 8 hour period? Can I check out another laptop right away?
If a loaner is not returned within the 8-hour loan period, the user will be notified that the loaner is overdue. Additionally, the user's account will be blocked from checking out another laptop from the kiosk. If the laptop is still not returned after that, it will be remotely locked and rendered inoperable.
If the user needs to checkout another laptop, please come to the Service Desk in person. From there, a discussion of the unblocking process will take place and/or we will provide a long-term loaner.
Do I have to return it to the kiosk I checked it out from?
Yes, the loaner laptop must be returned to the same kiosk it is checked out from. If it is not returned to the correct kiosk, the laptop will be immediately considered overdue and missing. Please notify the Service Desk if the laptop is returned to the incorrect kiosk.
I just returned a laptop, but it's saying I still have one checked out, what should I do?
Please notify the Service Desk immediately if this occurs. We will investigate the issue and take necessary action to correct your account status.
