Getting Started: Classroom Technology Installations to Support Hybrid Instruction

This article provides a brief introduction to the technology in newly equipped classrooms, and how to use it. It also shows some basic instruction on how to use it and settings to check for AV settings in the software you are using in the classroom.

Audience

This article is intended for faculty, staff, students, and visitors that may be using the technology in the classrooms.

Platform

Windows OS; MacOS; Crestron controls (AV Console); PixiePro controls (AV Console); Extron controls (AV Console)

Basic Equipment Overview

Upgraded classrooms are equipped with two main categories of technology: standard A/V installation with faculty audio, or faculty and student audio; advanced A/V installation, which is custom based on the room.

Faculty Audio Classroom

  • Ceiling mounted microphone, only above the lectern
  • Pan-tilt-zoom camera
  • Integrated room audio for speakers

Faculty and Student Audio Classroom

  • Ceiling mounted microphones evenly across the room
  • Pan-tilt-zoom camera
  • Integrated room audio for speakers

Advanced AV Installations include rooms that may have multiple cameras or other specially installed equipment; these are generally rooms that had pre-existing technology in them.

Using the technology

All AV equipment is routed through the AV cabinet and works with the desktop only. When you turn on the AV Audio system, desktop, and any programs that utilize microphone or camera, those devices will wake automatically. Similarly, they will turn off when the programs and audio systems are closed or shut down.

Pan-tilt-zoom Cameras

Rooms that have ceiling mounted cameras will either have a manual remote or the controls will be programmed into the touch panel that sits on the top of the lectern. For best results, point the camera remote directly at the camera during operation.

The remote has arrow keys for panning and tilting, zoom in / out buttons for zoom, and focus buttons to provide clear picture quality after changing the zoom level.

Some Items to Check

If you are having trouble connecting audio or video in the rooms, make sure that TesiraFORTE is listed as your microphone; CV610-UB USB2.0 Camera as the webcam; and CRESTRON or or EXTRON or HDMI listed as the output speakers. These apply to the pan-tilt-zoom cameras and the ceiling installed microphones; they may appear slightly different depending on the installed technology.

Most rooms do not have a laptop connection for the camera and microphones. If the computer does not detect the camera and/or microphone, please reach out to 607-274-1443 for assistance with troubleshooting.
