NVivo is a qualitative data analysis software tool used for coding and analyzing research data, including interviews, focus groups, documents, PDFs, surveys, social media content, audio/video files, and images.

This article is intended for faculty and staff who need to use NVivo for qualitative research and data analysis.

Prerequisites
NVivo is available on a limited license basis with 15 total seats. Licenses are assigned based on availability and research needs.
Licenses activate only when the application is in use. NVivo is also pre-installed on Laptop Anytime Kiosk computers for student use.
Request a NVivo License
Before you can install NVivo, you must request a license through the Service Desk.
- Navigate to the Software Application Licensing and Access service request form.
- Complete the required fields in the form.
- In the Software Application Name field, enter NVivo 14.
- Provide a brief description of your research needs and how you plan to use NVivo.
- Click Submit.
Once your request is approved and a license is assigned, you will receive a notification. The software will then become available for installation through Company Portal (Windows) or Self Service (macOS).
Install NVivo on Windows
After your license has been assigned, install NVivo from the Company Portal.
- Open Company Portal on your Windows computer.
- Click Apps in the navigation menu.
- Search for NVivo or scroll to find NVivo 14 in the list of available applications.
- Click Install.
- Wait for the installation to complete. This may take several minutes.
- Once installed, launch NVivo 14 from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.

Install NVivo on macOS
After your license has been assigned, install NVivo from Self Service.
- Open Self Service on your Mac.
- Search for NVivo or browse to find NVivo 14 in the list of available applications.
- Click Install.
- Wait for the installation to complete. This may take several minutes.
- Once installed, launch NVivo 14 from the Applications folder or Launchpad.

Getting Started with NVivo
NVivo provides comprehensive tools for qualitative data analysis. When you first launch the application, you can:
- Create a new project or open an existing one
- Import various data sources (documents, PDFs, audio, video, images, surveys, social media)
- Code and categorize your data
- Run queries and visualizations
- Generate reports and export findings
