When you see the BitLocker recovery screen, you need to enter your 48-digit recovery key to unlock your computer. Your recovery key is stored in your Ithaca College Microsoft account.

Retrieving Your Recovery Key from Your Phone
Follow these three straightforward steps to access your BitLocker recovery key using your mobile phone:
Step 1: Log In on Your Phone
Open your mobile web browser (Safari, Chrome, or Edge) and navigate to https://myaccount.microsoft.com. Enter your Ithaca College email address and password when prompted. Complete the multi-factor authentication (MFA) process by approving the sign-in request on your authenticator app or entering the code sent to your registered device.
Step 2: Navigate to Devices
Once logged in, locate the Devices tile on your account dashboard. Tap on View devices or select the menu icon if the tile is not immediately visible. This will display a list of all devices associated with your Microsoft account.
Step 3: Locate the BitLocker Key
Find your specific computer in the device list by matching the device name or model. Tap on the device name to expand its details or select the device row. Look for the View BitLocker keys link or button within the device information panel. Once selected, your 48-digit recovery key will be displayed on the screen. Carefully enter this recovery key on your locked computer to regain access.
Helpful Tips for Successful Recovery
Keep these tips in mind when retrieving your BitLocker recovery key:
- Format: The recovery key is 48 digits long, divided into 8 groups of 6 digits separated by hyphens (e.g.,
123456-234567-345678-456789-567890-678901-789012-890123).
- Numbers Only: Recovery keys contain only numbers, making them easier to enter accurately.
- Alternative Devices: If you cannot access your phone, you can use another computer or tablet to log into https://myaccount.microsoft.com using the same steps.
