LastPass Enterprise: Password Management Guide

Ithaca College has contracted with LastPass as a password management solution to enable staff and faculty to securely generate, save, use, and share work-related passwords.

Audience

This article is intended for IC staff and faculty.

At this time, students, alumni, and retirees are unable to participate in LastPass Enterprise.

License Requirements

Enrollment must be done on a per-request basis, either individually or from one individual on behalf of a team or department.

Getting Started

Once your enrollment request is processed, you will receive two emails:

  • LastPass Federated Login: an email confirming your LastPass administrator has enabled federated login (allowing for single sign-on (SSO) authentication)
  • Action Required: Activate Your LastPass Account: an email inviting you to activate your LastPass account

Activate Your Account

Install Browser Extension

  1. Open your preferred web browser (e.g. Microsoft Edge)
  2. Visit the LastPass downloads center, and download the browser extension (Only use this official download location)
  3. Once installed, you’ll see a dark square with three dots A square icon with three white circles across the center in a horizontal line. The background of the icon is dark grey.
  4. Click the square A square icon with three white circles across the center in a horizontal line. The background of the icon is dark grey. and enter your IC email address 
  5. You do not need to enter a master password (that option should disappear once a valid enrolled IC email address is entered) 
  6. Enter your IC email password (if you are not already logged in), then click Log In 
  7. Authenticate with Duo if prompted 
  8. Once this is complete, the browser extension turns red, A square icon with three white circles across the center in a horizontal line. The background of the icon is red. and is ready to be used
  9. Right-click and Pin the extension to your toolbar for quick access

Additional Settings

For the best experience with LastPass, it is recommended that you disable other password management extensions or add-ins from asking or automatically filling in passwords.

Access Your LastPass Vault

Your LastPass vault is your home to your passwords, secure notes, and passkeys. LastPass encrypts all of the sensitive information in your vault. No one, including LastPass or your administrator, can see the records you save.  

As you visit work-related webpages, you can easily save the credentials you use, or create new passwords, and save them to your LastPass vault. There are two ways to access your Ithaca College LastPass Enterprise vault:

Access via the Browser Extension 

  1. Open your preferred web browser (e.g., Microsoft Edge)
  2. Locate and open the LastPass extension menu A square icon with three white circles across the center in a horizontal line. The background of the icon is red.
  3. Sign in with your Ithaca College credentials if prompted 
  4. Use the quick menu, or click the Vault button to open the LastPass vault

Access via the LastPass Website 

  1. Go to https://lastpass.com/vault in a web browser
  2. Sign in with your Ithaca College credentials if prompted 
  3. Enter your IC email address and IC email password (if you are not already logged in), then click Log In 
  4. Authenticate with Duo if prompted \

Authentication

  • The LastPass browser extension automatically logs out after 9 hours of inactivity. Click the LastPass browser extension and click Log In to use your LastPass vault.
  • From time to time, you may need to reauthenticate, especially if you haven't used LastPass in a while or on a particular device. You should receive an email from <do-not-reply-support@lastpass.com>, which may ask you to "Verify new device or location."

Features

Autofill Your Login Credentials

  • When you first log in to a website, the LastPass browser extension will prompt you to save that site's login for you.
  • When you return to this website, LastPass will recognize it and enter the login for you (use the LastPass icon to the right of a password field).

Generate Secure Passwords 

  • Open your Vault from the browser extension, or visit the LastPass website.
  • Click Add Item in the bottom right corner to add an item to your vault.
  • To the right of the Password field, click the Generate password button to autogenerate a password.
  • Alternately,click the red icon to the right of a password field, select More options..., and select Generate a password.
