Overview
Dell Command Update is mandatory software for all Faculty and Staff Dell computers at Ithaca College. This application:
- Automatically detects and installs Dell-specific drivers and firmware
- Maintains system stability and security through regular updates
- Provides notifications when updates are available
- Allows scheduling of updates for minimal disruption
Note: Dell Command Update only works on Dell-branded computers. Non-Dell computers do not require this software.
Installing Dell Command Update
Dell Command Update is deployed through the Company Portal. If not already installed on your computer:
- Open Company Portal - see How to Use Company Portal for detailed instructions
- Search for Dell Command Update in the Company Portal
- Click Dell Command | Update when it appears in the results
- Click the Install button
- Installation runs in the background and takes approximately 5 minutes
- A restart may be required after installation completes
Automatic Configuration: Dell Command Update is pre-configured by IT to automatically check for and install critical updates, including drivers, firmware, and BIOS updates. No manual setup is required.
Working with Updates
Dell Command Update automatically checks for updates in the background. When updates are available:
- Open Dell Command Update from the Start menu to view available updates
- The application displays all pending updates, including:
- Critical security updates
- Driver updates (chipset, network, audio, video, storage)
- Firmware and BIOS updates
- Click Install to begin the update process
- Driver updates typically install without requiring a restart
- Firmware/BIOS updates require a system restart to complete
- If a restart is needed, you can defer it until your next reboot
Important for Laptops: Connect your laptop to AC power before installing firmware or BIOS updates. These updates cannot proceed on battery power.
Update Notifications
Dell Command Update provides Windows notifications when:
- New updates are available for installation
- Updates have been successfully installed
- A restart is required to complete installations
When you receive a notification:
- Click the notification to open Dell Command Update
- Review available updates
- Click Install to proceed with installation
Troubleshooting
Dell Command Update Not in Company Portal
- Ensure you're signed into Company Portal with your IC credentials
- Refresh the Company Portal by closing and reopening the application
- Contact the Service Desk if the application still doesn't appear
Updates Fail to Install
- Ensure your laptop is connected to AC power (for firmware/BIOS updates)
- Close all other applications before installing updates
- Restart your computer and try again
- Check that you have sufficient disk space (at least 2GB free)
Dell Command Update Won't Open
- Restart your computer
- Search for Dell Command | Update in the Start menu
- Reinstall from the Company Portal if the issue persists
Frequent Update Notifications
Dell Command Update checks for updates regularly. This is normal behavior and ensures your system stays secure and up-to-date. Critical updates install automatically to maintain security compliance.
